&
Provincial Secretary for Mental Health and Addictions
My name is Kaila and I’m here to listen to you and our community as we enter this exciting new chapter in Alberta Métis history!
I was raised on a ranch near Marlboro, Alberta and graduated from Parkland Composite High School.
I attended Langara College in Vancouver for post-secondary in Aboriginal Studies where I learned how intergenerational trauma impacts us today, the importance of understanding intercultural communication, and why it is crucial that we keep our culture and languages alive.
I have worked at the Alberta Legislature as a Legislative Coordinator, and then as a Ministerial Assistant to the Minister of Education. Through these experiences, I gained extensive knowledge of government procedures, policy development, legislation, public communications, and stakeholder relations.
Creating an inclusive society where everyone, from women and elders to the youth, has an equal opportunity to participate and be heard.
Protecting and promoting our traditions, language, and history for future generations.
Encouraging the active participation of our young people in community matters.
Making healthcare, education, and housing programs more accessible to meet our community's unique needs.
Advocating for culturally-sensitive community programs and treatment.
Working to ensure sustainable harvesting in all our traditional territories.
I am proud to have been raised in Yellowhead County, Alberta, where my family taught me the importance of being involved in my community and taking care of each other.
Bridging gaps, addressing issues, and finding solutions requires respectful communication and taking the time to understand the personal, cultural, and historical contexts of those involved.
Don't listen to simply respond, listen to understand.
Otipemisiwak means "The People Who Rule Themselves"
This is the first time we, the Metis People of Alberta, will be able to elect our own Self-Government. We have a chance to create our government and ensure it moves forward in a good way.
Government is about people. Without people, government is nothing.
I want to hear from all the Metis Citizens in our area! I'm happy to meet up with you or have a phone chat. Send me an email to set something up or call 780-225-9225 to chat.
